The patient was diagnosed with Basedow in 2019 and periodically treated with thyroid medication at the Central Endocrinological Hospital. Recently, the patient's neck has grown abnormally quickly, the tumor has developed large, causing difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, insomnia and greatly affecting aesthetics.
Test results showed that the patient's thyroid hormone was in a hypothyroid state, however, the antibodies to TRAb and Anti-TPO in the serum increased. Diagnostic ultrasound recorded a very large thyroid volume, uneven tissue mucous membranes, and many follicles. With a giant tumor that deformed the neck area, the patient had many consultations with surgeons but could not do it because the tumor increased cardiovascular strength and was unlikely to achieve optimal conditions. Currently, the patient's condition is more stable and he wants surgery to remove the gland.
This is considered a typical case, showing the complexity of the treatment of thyroid diseases, especially in giant butterfly cases that caused severe suppression of quality of life.
Dr. Le Thi Viet Ha - Head of the Department of Thyroid Diseases, Central Endocrinology Hospital - said: People who have unusual signs in the neck such as rapid enlargement, swallowing, difficulty breathing, prolonged loss of hearing or signs of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism should go to the Central Endocrinology Hospital for timely examination and treatment.
