Patient M.N (28 days old) was admitted to the hospital with a sluggish breathing, chest tightness and wheezing. Initially, the child was diagnosed with pneumonia and treated for several days. Although the symptoms of pneumonia have improved, the child still has difficulty breathing, especially when lying on his back, so he was transferred to the ENT.
endoscopy showed a round tumor that took up almost the entire throat, pressing on the laryngosphere and causing critical shortness of breath. Doctors determined that this is a duodenal follicular tumor - a type of tumor that is common in adults or young children, very rare in infants. M.N's case was particularly dangerous because the tumor was too large.
The ENT team - Interdisciplinary Department in coordination with the Department of Anesthesia performed emergency surgery. Although the patient was still very young, had a narrow area and had difficulty operating, the surgery was performed safely and successfully. After surgery, the child completely stopped having symptoms of difficulty breathing, wheezing and his health quickly stabilized, and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon.
Dr. CKII Nguyen Van Ninh - Deputy Head of the Department, Head of the Interdisciplinary Department (TMH - RHM - Eye) - said: This is a rare but especially dangerous case. If the cyst ruptures, fluid flows into the airway, which can cause severe suffocation. Parents need to take their children to a specialized medical facility immediately when there are unusual signs such as wheezing and difficulty breathing for timely diagnosis and treatment.
