The Department of Social Work, Can Tho Central General Hospital (DKTU) informed that in order to continue the success in the field of organ transplantation, the hospital has currently developed a plan to send personnel for in-depth training in liver transplantation techniques, with the goal of performing the first liver transplant in 2026.
This goal is to expand the hospital's professional capacity, helping patients in the Mekong Delta not have to travel far but still benefit from advanced medicine.
Previously, on April 25, 2024, Can Tho General Hospital successfully performed the first kidney transplant, officially becoming the 26th kidney transplant center in the country; the first hospital in the Mekong Delta to successfully implement this high-tech transplant.
Up to this point, Can Tho General Hospital - a final-line hospital under the Ministry of Health, has successfully performed 10 consecutive kidney transplants from living donors. Of which, there were 3 cases where the person donated blood directly (wife donated kidneys to husband).
Notably, the kidney transplant took place on December 3, 2024. In March 2024, patient L.V (male, born in 1986, address in Vinh Long) had difficulty breathing, was hospitalized with a diagnosis of end-stage chronic kidney failure and was indicated for emergency blood filtration and then had regular dialysis there. With the desire to get a kidney transplant and return to normal life, the couple registered for a kidney transplant with the donor, the patient's wife.

The most recent case was the 10th case in a male patient (37 years old, Can Tho City) who was diagnosed with hypertension in July 2021, high blood pressure 190/100mmHg and was treated with anti-hypertensive drugs. In November 2021, the patient with edema at both lower limbs was admitted to the hospital for treatment with a diagnosis of stage 5 chronic kidney failure, and was assigned to have emergency blood filtration and perform peritoneal anastemia until now.
After preparing legal documents and actively treating, the kidney transplant was performed on April 22, 2025 with the technique of removing the left kidney using endoscopy from the donor into the right pelvic cavity of the recipient.
