The first complete BiVACOR artificial heart transplant in Australia has been recognized as a complete clinical success, as the patient becomes the first person in the world to be discharged from the hospital with this device. The transplant is part of the Pioneer Artificial Heart program, led by Monash University and funded with 50 million Australian dollars from the Australian Government's Future Medical Research Fund.

The patient was a man in his 40s in New South Wales. He became the first person in the world to be discharged from the hospital with a fully artificial heart. The 6-hour surgery was performed on November 22, 2024 at St Vincent's Sydney Hospital. The patient was discharged from the hospital in early February 2025.

On March 6, 2025, the patient successfully received a heart transplant, setting a record of 105 days of living with a completely BiVACOR artificial heart before receiving a donated heart.

Dr Daniel Timms, Australian inventor of BiVACOR, founder and Technical Director of BiVACOR, expressed: It is wonderful that our device can support patients for such a long time. The unique design and outstanding features of BiVACOR create an unprecedented safety proof. It is touching to see decades of research now come true.

Professor Sharon Pickering - Vice President and President of Monash University - emphasized: "The Pioneer Artificial Heart Program is a testament to Monash's commitment to promoting research and innovation to create practical values for people, families, communities, not only in Australia but globally."
