In the Family Doctor program (aired on THVL1 channel), the topic "The importance of calcium for athletes" was consulted by Master - Doctor Dang Phan Vinh Toan, Department of Orthopedics - Thong Nhat Hospital, HCMC.
Dr. Toan said: “Calcium is very important for people who practice sports. Calcium will stimulate some proteins to help muscle contractions to avoid muscle weakness and cramps. This is an important component of bones that helps strengthen bones. Especially for people who regularly practice sports, strong bones are a very necessary factor.”
According to Dr. Toan, a lack of calcium during exercise will reduce muscle strength. In the case of people who exercise, a lack of calcium will affect a number of issues that weaken the coordination of movements, increasing the risk of injury.
In addition, in cases where patients lack calcium leading to osteoporosis, there is a risk of bone fractures as well as injuries during exercise.
To avoid the risk of calcium deficiency, the male doctor said: “First, patients need to prioritize calcium from calcium-rich food sources such as milk, cheese, salmon, and green leafy vegetables. Second, if the diet does not provide enough calcium, calcium supplements can be used. It should be combined with vitamin D and vitamin K to help increase calcium absorption.
Third, it is important to supplement other minerals such as magnesium and zinc. Fourth, calcium should be supplemented after meals or after exercise to optimize absorption. Finally, patients need to maintain adequate water intake during and after exercise.
