On July 18, 2025, many delegates from management agencies, experts, businesses, cooperatives and farmers attended the Forum "Solutions to increase competitiveness, promote the export of advantageous fruit products: passion fruit, bananas, pineapple, coconut" organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, chaired by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam.
Speaking at the opening of the forum, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong emphasized that in the general picture of the Vietnamese agricultural sector, fruit trees play an important driving force, contributing to increasing farmers' income and boosting exports.
With a total area of fruit trees nationwide reaching about 1.3 million hectares and an estimated output of 15 million tons/year, the Vietnamese fruit industry is increasingly affirming its position in the international market. In particular, passion fruit, banana, pineapple and coconut are potential products that need to be invested in thoroughly to become a national product.
However, the current number of billion-dollar exported fruits is still very modest. In 2024, only durian reached 3.3 billion USD - the only commodity exceeding the billion-dollar mark, while dragon fruit decreased sharply to more than 534 million USD. This shows that the fruit industry still has a lot of room but needs strong breakthrough solutions, especially in the context of vegetable and fruit exports in the first half of 2025 showing signs of slowing down.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has also developed orientations for each type of fruit. For bananas, it will develop raw material areas that meet VietGAP standards, promote deep processing and officially export. For pineapple, focus on spreading the crop, increasing productivity and diversifying products. For passion fruit, prioritize disease-resistant varieties, expand the market. For coconut, combine garden economic development with eco-tourism and OCOP products.
Also this morning, many speakers who are experts and managers presented presentations, shared experiences and proposed practical solutions to promote the potential and advantages of key fruit products. The discussion focused on reorganizing production, building sustainable raw material areas, promoting deep processing, developing export markets and improving competitiveness for Vietnamese agricultural products.
Concluding the forum, Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam emphasized: "agriculture is the birth of all occupations". To develop rural industry, eco-tourism, domestic trade or global exports - all must start from the foundation of sustainable agriculture. The main fruit tree group: Passion fruit, banana, pineapple, coconut - if scientifically reorganized, invested in depth, and linked the entire chain, will not only help increase export value but also be the foundation for successfully implementing the goal of "eco-agriculture, modern countryside, civilized farmers" that the Party and Government are persistently pursuing.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is committed to accompanying farmers, businesses and localities in the journey to create a green, responsible and internationally integrated agriculture.
