16 students in Kien Giang hospitalized for suspected food poisoning

About 16 students from Kien Hai Secondary and High School (Kien Hai district, Kien Giang province) were hospitalized for treatment of suspected food poisoning symptoms.

Specifically, the incident started on the afternoon of September 23, 2024, and peaked on the morning of September 24, 2024. According to the school's Board of Directors, as of the afternoon of September 24, 16 students were affected and suspected of food poisoning.

From the afternoon of September 23, some students began to show symptoms of suspected food poisoning and visited the Kien Hai District Medical Center. Some other students bought medicine from private clinics in Hon Tre Commune to treat themselves. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

By the morning of September 24, 12 students were hospitalized at the Kien Hai District Medical Center. One of them had low blood pressure, so the Center transferred him to Kien Giang Provincial General Hospital; three students were transferred to the mainland by their families. The rest were treated at the District Medical Center, but their families wanted to be more assured, so they also requested to be transferred to the province for treatment.

This afternoon, 4 more students reported symptoms of suspected poisoning such as fever, nausea, diarrhea and stomachache...

The school has directed homeroom teachers to monitor the students' situation and coordinate with their parents to temporarily suspend them from school for treatment; visit and encourage them.

Also this morning, the medical inspection team took food samples from the school cafeteria and sent them to the province for testing to determine the exact source of the poisoning.

The school is waiting for test results from Kien Hai District Medical Center.

Mr. Lang Manh Hung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Hon Tre Commune (Kien Hai District) - said that the students suspected of being poisoned are from different levels, the symptoms appeared after breakfast, the authorities have not yet determined what the students ate and where. The local medical facility is investigating and will inform again.
