Digital transformation of logistics industry, improving competitiveness

Digital transformation of the logistics industry will reduce costs, enhance competitiveness and take advantage of opportunities to participate deeply in the global supply chain.

At the workshop "Promoting digital transformation in the logistics industry" held on January 9, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade emphasized that the orientation of digital transformation in the logistics sector has been included in many important decisions.

The National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030, has identified logistics as one of the eight areas that need digital transformation priority.

In addition, Decision No. 221/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister also identifies one of the tasks to enhance the competitiveness and develop Vietnam's logistics services by 2025 as "Research, application, transfer of technology and technical advances, promoting digital transformation in logistics services".

Presenting the Draft Report on Digital Transformation in Logistics in Vietnam - Current Situation and Recommendations by a team of domestic and international experts from the Vietnam Digital Trade Project (VDT), Ms. Pham Thi Lan Huong, National Expert, USAID's Vietnam Digital Trade Project, emphasized that the project aims to assess the level of digital transformation in the port, warehouse, transportation and last-mile delivery service sectors in Vietnam, and at the same time provide specific policy recommendations.

According to Ms. Lan Huong, the results of the Report show that most businesses are aware of the importance of digital transformation in logistics enterprises. However, there are differences between industry groups, for example, the last-mile delivery group has a higher level of investment and active digital transformation activities than the transportation group.

Along with that, technology solutions and infrastructure for digital transformation are increasingly diverse and there is a gradual shift from foreign software and solution providers to Vietnamese enterprises.

Limited capital and lack of qualified personnel are the main barriers for logistics enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises. FDI enterprises and last-mile delivery groups have a higher level of digital transformation thanks to advantages in capital, international experience and market pressure.

Mr. Trevor O’Regan - International Expert of the Digital Trade Project in Vietnam of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) - assessed that with a long coastline and major international ports (Hai Phong, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau), Vietnam has become an ideal hub for maritime transport. Vietnam's logistics industry accounts for about 4.5% of GDP and is growing at a rate of 14-16% per year.

The government is investing heavily in logistics infrastructure, including building new highways and expanding airports. However, Vietnam’s supply chains face challenges such as high logistics costs, infrastructure gaps and complex regulations in some cases.
