On June 10, Mr. Nguyen Minh Canh - Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee - inspected the management and operation of An Hiep landfill (Ba Tri district) and the progress of the An Hiep landfill investment and expansion project (phase 2).

At the inspection, the leader of Ba Tri District People's Committee said that the District People's Committee had approved a compensation and support plan for 4 phases for 16 households, with a total recovered land area of 44,216m2, and a total compensation and support cost of more than 14.4 billion VND. To date, the district has paid compensation to 15/16 households, an amount of more than 13.6 billion VND, the remaining 1 household has not received it, an amount of more than 788.4 million VND.
Regarding the situation of waste receiving and treatment, waste is currently being received and buried in Zone 12 (expected to be filled by the end of June 2025). From July 2025, garbage will be received in Zone 14, expected to be full by the end of December 2025 (Area 14 under the An Hiep Landfill Expansion and Investment Project Phase 2).
To ensure the ability to receive waste in early 2026, the People's Committee of Ba Tri district has submitted a document (No. 782/TTr-UBND dated March 21, 2025) requesting a policy to adjust and supplement the design of the An Hiep and Ba Tri landfill expansion project (phase 2), in which it is expected to add 3 new garbage storage areas, including area 13 with a leachate storage design, area of 2,500m2; area 15 and area 16 with a landfill design, area of 7,415m2.
On May 21, 2025, the People's Committee of Ben Tre province approved the policy of using the remaining compensation and resettlement support costs to continue investing in items of the An Hiep landfill expansion project (phase 2). Up to now, the People's Committee of Ba Tri district has directed the Project Management Board to carry out the following investment procedures.
Currently, difficulties in waste treatment include: leachate mainly arising in areas 11 and 12 due to not being covered with tarpaulins. Wastewater including leachate and mixed rainwater is currently flooding part of the internal road. At the same time, the amount of wastewater previously pumped into ponds (located in the area of phase 2 landfill expansion) has not been treated. The stench arose locally in the buried areas. Due to the influence of the wind direction, the smell has spread to neighboring residential areas.

Concluding the inspection, Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Canh requested the management and operation unit of An Hiep landfill to focus on immediately handling issues arising in waste reception and treatment, such as stagnant rainwater, leachate, some damaged and torn tarpaulins that cause foul odors; promptly carry out tarpaul covering in the new garbage reception area to limit odors and affect surrounding residential areas. At the same time, speed up the implementation of the investment project, expand the An Hiep landfill (phase 2) to soon add the ability to receive and treat waste in the coming time.
