On the afternoon of March 14, the People's Court of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province opened a first-instance trial, sentencing Tran Hoang Tam (born in 1981, residing in Dong Nai province) to 8 years in prison for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property" and 3 years in prison for the crime of "Using fake documents of agencies and organizations".
Combined with the 8-year prison sentence for the crime of "Organizing illegal use of drugs" sentenced by the People's Court of Binh Thanh District (HCMC) in June 2024, Tam must serve a total of 19 years in prison.
According to the indictment, on September 26, 2023, Tam rented a car with license plate 72A-60x.xx from T.A Company for 800,000 VND/day, valid until October 2, 2023. Tam then continued to rent from T.A Company an additional car with license plate 51H-65x.xx for 1 million VND/day but did not specify the deadline.
Due to need for money, Tam hired someone to forge a 72A-60x.xx car registration certificate for 2.5 million VND. Then on October 1, 2023, Tam mortgaged the car and fake documents to Mr. M to borrow 250 million VND, with an interest rate of 5%/month, but wrote it as a car sale certificate.
Trusting him, Mr. M mortgaged the car with fake documents and gave Tam 250 million VND to borrow. The money appropriated was spent by Tam.
