People in Cho Lon wake up early to buy sugar cane to worship the Jade Emperor.
According to folk customs, the 9th of January is the "celebration" day of the Jade Emperor. People often prepare offerings including incense, votive paper money, marigolds, fresh coconuts, tea, sugar and, of course, a pair of golden sugarcanes to worship. In Ho Chi Minh City, the places where the Jade Emperor's "celebration" is most often worshiped are districts and counties where Chinese people live. To choose a pair of beautiful, golden, straight sugarcanes, people often have to go shopping early in the morning, because if they come late in the day, there will be no more beautiful sugarcanes, but only ugly, stunted ones.

The sugarcane market on Le Quang Sung Street only met on two days, January 8 and 9 and has existed for more than 20 years. During these two days, dozens of tons of sugarcane from Cho Gao (Tien Giang) were transported here by traders to sell.
