In recent days, high tides have occurred on the roads of Long Chau, Phuoc Hau and Tan Hanh wards, with some places flooded from 30 - 50cm, making it difficult for people to travel.
Motorbikes often stalled in the middle of the road, many people had to walk or find a way around to move.
Not only traffic, but small business activities are also affected. Ms. Quan Thi Thu Nguyet, owner of a grocery store in Tan Hanh ward, said that the flood level this year is higher than last year, a retaining wall has been built, but the water is higher than expected, so many goods are also wet.
"The water has been flooding for three or four days now, the family has had to move goods up high, blocking the water in front of the door. Customers are afraid to stop by and sell unsold, and every time the water rises, it is very difficult to prevent flooding," Ms. Nguyet added.
According to Mr. Van Huu Hue - Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Vinh Long province, local flooding occurs due to high tides combined with heavy rain.
According to Mr. Hue, the highest peak tide in this period will occur on October 23-24 (September 3-4 of the lunar calendar), the water level may reach 215 cm in My Thuan, 35 cm higher than alert level III.
"The province has directed sectors to coordinate in establishing an ODA project to prevent flooding in the old Vinh Long City area, to control flooding and adapt to climate change, contributing to stabilizing people's lives and sustainable socio-economic development," Mr. Hue added.
