According to data reported by the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province, from October 7 to 24, unusually high tides will flood many areas, directly affecting people's lives and agricultural production.
Preliminary data from 15 communes and wards shows that the total flooded rice area is about 252 hectares, of which Hieu Thanh commune suffered the most damage with 187.2 hectares. The area of the flooded fruit garden is up to 2,461 hectares, mainly concentrated in Hieu Thanh, Tan Luoc and My Thuan communes.
The flooded area is about 217 hectares. About 2.57 hectares of fish ponds were also damaged, estimated at nearly 800 million VND.
Irrigation system is seriously affected: 23.5km of embankment is overflowed, 22 landslides with a total length of 1,372m.
Notably, on the morning of October 23, the Thanh Long Islet dike section broke 15m, flooding 15 hectares of fruit gardens and affecting 6 households, with initial damage of about 75 million VND.
The People's Committees of communes have mobilized more than 30 people to coordinate temporary reinforcements to limit damage, while implementing the "4 on-site" motto.

Speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Van Huu Hue - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province - said that the main cause of high tides is heavy rain combined with upstream floods and high tides, exceeding the historical level in 2022. Many dikes and regulating culverts are now degraded, no longer ensuring flood prevention.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment has directed localities to monitor and temporarily overcome the situation, and at the same time propose funding to repair and upgrade the irrigation system.
"Regarding resettlement housing, the old Ben Tre areas need to arrange 838 households with a budget of 160.9 billion VND; the old Tra Vinh area is expected to have 257 households with a budget of 141.35 billion VND in the period of 2026-2030", Mr. Hue added.
