A major step forward has just taken place on Apple's infotainment platform when OpenAI officially put ChatGPT on CarPlay into operation in the form of hands-free conversations. To experience this advanced feature, users are required to update their iPhone device to iOS version 26.4 or later, and download the latest updated ChatGPT application.
This move marks Apple's rare openness, allowing third-party artificial intelligence assistants to intervene deeper into car systems, a policy that the US technology company relaxed at the end of March.
The biggest highlight of the update is the ability to interact with voice completely hands-free. Previously, the use of AI chatbots often required users to continuously touch the phone screen, posing many unsafe risks when participating in traffic.
Now, with ChatGPT on CarPlay, drivers only need to use natural voice commands to schedule, search for in-depth information or create work notes without taking their eyes off the road. However, Apple still applies extremely strict safety censorship rules. Voice-enabled applications on cars are only allowed to be displayed through three standardized interface templates to completely prevent complex menus from distracting the driver.
Not only limited in terms of interface display, the operating method of ChatGPT on CarPlay has also been refined to best suit the mobile environment.
This system is designed to be task-oriented instead of maintaining long open conversations. AI will receive requests, respond directly and end interaction as soon as the task is completed.
Although some users may feel regretful for not being able to chat with AI while waiting for a red light, from a traffic safety perspective, this is a completely reasonable decision to maintain maximum concentration.
