After the merger, 5 out of 34 provinces and cities have 2 civil airports. Visitors can even experience the first "inner-city" flight route in Vietnam.

From July 1, 2025, after implementing the rearrangement of provincial-level administrative units, Vietnam has 5 provinces and cities that own 2 operating airports, including: Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Gia Lai, An Giang and Dak Lak.

This merger not only changes administrative boundaries but also affects the notification system at airports, flight information...

Following the notification board, listening to the radio system and asking for information from airport staff will help passengers limit the risk of confusion and flight missed in the early stages of implementing changes.

HCMC

In addition to Tan Son Nhat International Airport - a strategic airport with a capacity of nearly 40 million passengers in 2024 and an average of 600 flights per day, Con Dao Airport is also officially under Ho Chi Minh City.

After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City will be the locality with "inner-city" flights. To date, the Ho Chi Minh City - Con Dao route has become the only one-stop flight in a city in Vietnam.

With a flight time of about 50 minutes to an hour, passengers have many options for departure times from Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao. Airfares range from 1.1 to 1.8 million VND per trip.

Da Nang City

Da Nang City currently has two airports including Da Nang International Airport - the gateway to the Central region with an output of more than 13 million visitors in 2024 - and Chu Lai Airport (formerly in Quang Nam province).

Chu Lai Airport is planned to expand to a capacity of 10 million passengers by 2030 and can accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747-8, Airbus A380.

Gia Lai

Gia Lai province currently manages two airports, Pleiku and Phu Cat. Phu Cat Airport - formerly in the old Binh Dinh Province.

Phu Cat airport has been approved for upgrading with a total investment of more than VND 3,200 billion, aiming for a capacity of 5 million passengers by 2030 and 7 million by 2050.

Meanwhile, Pleiku airport is also planned to reach a capacity of 5 million passengers and 12,000 tons of cargo per year by 2050.

Dak Lak

Dak Lak province will manage two airports, Buon Ma Thuot and Tuy Hoa. Buon Ma Thuot Airport is expected to reach a capacity of 5 million passengers/year by 2030, invested synchronously to exploit narrow-body aircraft.

Meanwhile, Tuy Hoa airport (formerly part of the old Phu Yen province) will be upgraded with the goal of reaching 3 million passengers in 2030 and 5 million passengers in 2050.

An Giang

After the merger, An Giang not only has a sea but also has Phu Quoc International Airport and Rach Gia Airport - both formerly in Kien Giang province. Interestingly, in previous years, the old Kien Giang province had an intra-provincial route of Rach Gia - Phu Quoc.

Phu Quoc airport is being doubled in area to serve the APEC 2027 Conference, with a budget of more than VND 22,000 billion. It is expected that when the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion investment project is completed in the first quarter of 2027, the airport will reach a capacity of 18 million passengers in 2027 and 50 million in 2050.

Rach Gia airport is planned to be upgraded and will serve as a reserve for Phu Quoc during the APEC.
