From a street bread stall in the 1930s owned by Mr. Tran Van Hau and his wife, the shop has now been passed down to the third generation, the family of the grandchild. The shop is currently located at 19 Huynh Khuong Ninh Street, in a small apartment at the foot of the apartment complex.
Not only has it attracted Saigon diners for decades, Bay Ho sandwiches are also famous among international visitors. In 2018, the shop was contacted by Netflix to film a documentary for the series Street Food: Asia - a series specifically about street food in Asian countries. To this day, the shop still has a sign with the words "Bay Ho On Air In Netflix".
Ruairidh Manson is a Scottish tourist who owns a Youtube channel with more than 500,000 followers. He recently shared his experience eating bread at Bay Ho bakery. He introduced in his short video that: "This is one of the oldest and most popular bakeries not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also in Vietnam."
"A cake with fillings of carrots, pickled radish, cucumber, green onion, coriander, chili sauce, roast pork, pork roll, fatty pate and indispensable crispy and delicious bread. The restaurant's chili sauce is so spicy (really too much to bear), as soon as I ate it, my face and mouth were burning like fire. However, my wallet was not "burned" because each cake cost only 1.07 USD", said a Western diner.
After finishing the first one, Ruairidh found it very spicy but couldn't resist, he said "the cake is so delicious, I want to eat 7 more". And just a few minutes later, he ordered more cakes to "enjoy" it.
This sandwich cart is always crowded with customers waiting in line to buy. The busiest time is in the morning when it first opens from 6am to 9:30am, the customers are mainly office workers, laborers, students, foreigners...
