According to Resolution 60 of the 11th conference of the 13th Central Executive Committee, Quang Tri and Quang Binh are expected to merge. After the merger, the new name was Quang Tri province and the administrative center of the new province was located in the current Quang Binh.

Quang Binh and Quang Tri are two provinces that border Laos and are located on the East-West economic corridor. The economy is mainly agriculture, forestry and fishery, tourism, wind power and border gate.

In particular, tourism in this area is the most famous in the country and has reached international standards with the nickname "the realm of caves", especially when it owns Son Doong cave. The cave is located in the core area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, in Tan Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province.

Son Doong has attracted the attention of domestic and international tourists since 2009 when the British - Vietnamese cave exploration group announced records of its size. In 2009, the cave was announced by the exploration team and the magazine National Geographic as the world's largest natural limestone cave. In 2013, Son Doong was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest natural cave.

The cave has a total length of nearly 9 km, the cave arch is large with an area of up to 38.5 million m3. Not only is Son Doong huge in size, it also contains a unique world inside the cave, from the bulge trees tens of meters high, primeval forests, ecosystems, and unique weather systems to endless underground rivers that no one has ever explored.
