According to Decision No. 759/QD-TTg, Bac Giang province and Bac Ninh province will be merged into a new province called Bac Ninh province.
The administrative - political center is located in Bac Giang City today, with a natural area of 4,718.6 km2 and a population of 3,509,100 people.
Historically, Bac Ninh has been separated and merged many times, including a period of merger with Bac Giang province to form Ha Bac province.

History of the formation of Bac Ninh province
According to the records of the sets of books in the Nguyen Dynasty's Testaments (at the National Archives Center IV), over the past thousand years, the Kinh Bac region has changed its name and administrative boundaries many times.
According to "Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu", volume 12, by 1469, this place was changed to the Imperial strategy of Kinh Bac, which ruled 4 governments and 16 districts.
In 1490, the Imperial Academy changed Kinh Bac to Kinh Bac. The book "Kham Quoc Viet Su Danh Hoc Thuong Hoc Hoc Hoc" wrote: "In April, the season is low, divided into 13 countries in the country. Previously, maps were arranged and divided into 12 superstitious religions in the country. Up to now, the king has decided to increase the number of households and areas, dividing them into 13 countries", among which is Kinh Bac.
In 1802, King Gia Long sealed the administrative units under Kinh Bac town, re-located the plains in towns, villages and districts. In 1822, King Minh Menh changed Kinh Bac town to Bac Ninh town. The name Bac Ninh started from there.
In 1831, during the country's administrative reform, King Minh Menh continued to change the provincial palaces and towns. Bac Ninh Tran was changed to Bac Ninh province, including 4 provinces: Tu Son, Thien Phuc, Thuan An and Lang Giang.
Separations and mergers
After its establishment, Bac Ninh province has gone through many separations and mergers.
According to the Ministry's ban dated December 13, 1851 on the request of Bac Ninh province to merge a number of districts, King Tu Duc changed 4 tutes of Luc Ngan district to Lang Giang province in Bac Ninh province (1870); added Dong Anh district to Tu Son province; transferred some districts of Bac Ninh province to Thai province (Thai Nguyen - 1880)...
According to documents from the Bac Ninh Provincial Electronic Information Portal, in 1887, a number of localities in Bac Ninh province were separated from the districts: Sieu Loai, Gia Lam and Luong Tai to merge into Hung Yen province. 5 localities of Van Giang district are merged into Hai Duong province.
In October 1895, the French colonialists divided Bac Ninh province into the two provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang. The new Bac Ninh province has two governments, Thuan Thanh and Tu Son, including 10 districts.
During the period from 1890, Bac Ninh has repeatedly separated and merged districts, changing administrative boundaries.
On April 20, 2021, the National Assembly issued a Resolution approving the expansion of Hanoi city. On that basis, 29 communes and towns of Bac Ninh province will be merged into Hanoi.
On October 27, 1962, the Second National Assembly issued a Resolution merging the two provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang into Ha Bac province.
On April 1,633, Ha Bac province officially operated under a new administrative unit, the provincial center was located in Bac Giang town.
On November 6, 1996 at the 10th session, the 9th National Assembly issued a Decision approving the re-establishment of the two provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang.
On January 1, 1997, Bac Ninh province officially operated under a new administrative unit. Bac Ninh town becomes a provincial town. Bac Ninh province has an area of 822.7km2 with 5 districts and 1 town, with 123 communes, wards and towns; population of 925,997 people.
After many adjustments to administrative boundaries, Bac Ninh currently has 8 district-level administrative units, including: Tien Du, Yen Phong, Que Vo, Thuan Thanh, Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Tu Son city and Bac Ninh city.
After many historical changes, Bac Ninh has been divided, merged and changed in different names and geographical boundaries. In the near future, Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces will merge into a new province called Bac Ninh province.
