Nearly 5,000 children in Dak Lak are taught safe swimming

Dak Lak - In recent years, nearly 5,000 local children have been taught safe swimming from an international cooperation project sponsored by a unit from the United States.

On July 22, the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Health held a meeting to announce and implement the project "Support the implementation of effective and sustainable interventions to prevent and combat child drowning in the province in 2025".

According to statistics from the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Health, from 2021 to July 2025, the locality has a total of 251 deaths from drowning. Of these, the majority of the victims were children.

In the period of 2019 - 2022 and 2024, the project will support the implementation of effective and sustainable interventions to prevent and combat child drowning in the locality. The activities have contributed significantly to the work of preventing and combating drowning for children.

In the recent period, with the support of the Campaign for Tobacco- Free Kids (CTFK/USA), the project has been deployed in all areas of the province.

The authorities organized 55 training courses for 2,750 people who are families with children under 6 years old, preschool teachers on measures to prevent and combat drowning.

In total, 234 safe swimming classes have been taught to 4,680 children; 84 training classes have been deployed to supplement knowledge of safe water environment for 4,200 children.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh - Deputy Director of the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Health - commented: "The province has many ponds, lakes, rivers and streams and many difficult socio-economic conditions. In recent years, the province has been one of the localities heavily affected by the death of children from drowning".

According to Mr. Thanh, in recent years, the project has played an important role, serving as a basis for local authorities and related organizations to invest sustainably in child drowning prevention. At the same time, the project also affirms the importance of cross-sectoral coordination between health, education, organizations and the government in protecting children".

"Based on the success of previous implementations, in 2025, we will continue to use funding effectively. Thereby, equipping children with the necessary skills to prevent drowning," Mr. Thanh added.

According to the study, the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee has signed a decision approving the aid for a technical assistance project to support the implementation of effective and sustainable interventions to prevent and control child drowning.

The total value of the aid is more than 3.4 billion VND, equivalent to 147,565 USD. The above amount was sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco- Free Kids (CTFK/USA) and managed and implemented by the project owner.

The goal of the project is to help at least 4,000 children aged 6 - 15 in the locality learn to swim safely. Swimming teaching activities implemented at the commune level are periodically and regularly monitored by provincial and grassroots levels. The implementation period is from May to December 2025.
