5 years of hoping for children with the family of Mr. Nguyen Van Cham (born 1993, Tay ethnicity) and Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong (born 1997, Nung ethnicity), from Tuyen Quang (Bac Quang district, former Ha Giang province), is a period of time filled with a lot of pressure and feelings that are difficult to name.
When the economy becomes the biggest barrier on the journey to find children
The years of hoping for children were also a time when they had to face no small pressure from the unintentional questions of those around them. Every time they heard someone ask when they would have a baby, both chose to avoid it, appearing less in crowded places because they were afraid of greetings.
What makes their journey to find a child even more difficult is their extremely difficult economic situation. In the family, Mr. Cham's older brother has been infertile for 10 years, and his biological mother has breast cancer, so all expenses have become a burden.
The family's economy is very difficult, but my older brother is infertile for many years, so my husband and I decided to give up the opportunity to treat them first. All the buffaloes and cows in the house are sold to use in vitro fertilization for my older brother," Mr. Cham shared.
Fortunately, after that, his older brother's family received their child thanks to treatment at Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital. That story became the motivation for Mr. Cham and his wife to go to Hanoi for another examination.
However, the results after examination they received remained unchanged. IVF is the biggest opportunity but also beyond the financial capacity of the young couple. Income is only enough to cover daily living expenses, forcing them to put aside their dream of becoming parents to continue working.
Missing you, just want to finish work quickly to go home with you
The turning point came in 2024 when they learned about the "Golden Week - Nurturing the Seeds of Happiness" program organized by Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital. This is an annual community support program for infertile families in difficult circumstances.
Bringing hope, the couple submitted applications for consideration of a 100% free IVF support package. Not daring to expect too much, but then a miracle happened when Mr. Cham and his wife became one of the 15 families receiving support that year.
When submitting the application, we didn't think we would be selected, until we received a phone call from the hospital, the couple hugged each other and cried. If it weren't for this program, I don't know when we would dare to think about having children," Mr. Cham emotionally recounted.
For them, the greatest value that Golden Week brings is not only financial support, but also an opportunity for families who once had to give up hope to continue their journey to find their children.
The IVF process of the couple went smoothly. Throughout the journey, Mr. Cham and his wife always received companionship and encouragement from the team of doctors and medical staff of the hospital.
After 12 days of embryo transfer, the moment Ms. Phuong held a pregnancy test stick in her hand and saw two lines appearing even though they were still blurry, both burst into joy. For the first time, they experienced emotions that he was confused and did not know how to name.
The pregnancy went smoothly and the day the baby was born also became the most special moment in Mr. Cham's life.
Mr. Cham said that since having a child, the life of the whole family has become busier and more busy. "Some days when I go to work, I miss my child so much that I just want to finish work quickly to go home. Now the house always has the sound of my child laughing, the sound of my child crying, feeling very happy," Mr. Cham shared.
For Ms. Phuong, the journey of becoming a mother after many years of waiting made her even more cherish every simple moment. From the first time she heard the fetal heartbeat, feeling the baby kicking, to hugging the baby in her arms after giving birth, everything became a memory that she never thought she would experience one day.
After all the difficulties and times when they thought they had to give up, they said that the most precious thing at present is to watch their children grow up together every day.
From June 15 to June 28, 2026, Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital organizes the program "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness 2026" with the theme "Wings for the dream of being a parent".
Accordingly, the Hospital provides free consultation, ultrasound, semen analysis, ovarian reserve assessment (AMH), uterine and fallopian tube X-ray; 20% reduction in paraclinical examination costs; and a support voucher of 5 million VND when performing in vitro fertilization.
