Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee has just issued a plan to implement an intervention program to reduce child mortality under 5 years old in the period 2026 - 2030 to create strong changes in action, effectively mobilize social resources to improve nutrition, reduce disease and reduce child mortality, according to the Lao Cai Electronic Information Portal (TTĐT).
The plan is implemented throughout the province, prioritizing particularly difficult villages and communes, ethnic minority areas, remote and isolated areas, and border areas - where child mortality rates are still high.
According to the set target, by 2030, the province strives for 95% of women giving birth to children to be supported by skilled health workers; over 90% of newborns to receive essential early care; 100% of children from 0 - 59 months old to have periodic health check-ups and establish monitoring records.
To achieve this goal, Lao Cai focuses on improving the capacity of obstetrics and pediatrics at all levels; expanding the network of village midwives; deploying essential early care and Kangaroo method for premature and underweight babies.
Expanded immunization is identified as one of the key solutions, with a target of over 95% of children under 1 year old being fully vaccinated. The province will organize compensatory and booster vaccinations for cases that have not been fully vaccinated, especially in remote and isolated areas with a large number of ethnic minorities.
In addition, the province also implements prenatal screening and neonatal screening activities; early detection of birth defects and congenital diseases for management, intervention and timely treatment. The work of improving nutrition for mothers and children, promoting breastfeeding, detecting and treating common diseases in children is also strengthened.
The plan also focuses on preventing and combating injuries in children under 5 years old, focusing on risks such as drowning, foreign object choking, suffocation, burns, poisoning and domestic accidents.
The Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Health to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Education and Training, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions, and the People's Committees of communes and wards to synchronously implement the plan in the period 2026 - 2030.
