By the Ma River, Muong Luan tower has been quietly present for hundreds of years as an ancient trace of the Lao community in Dien Bien land.
In Muong Luan 1 village, Muong Luan commune, the ancient tower has a slender appearance, leaning in the middle of the mountain sky. After the restoration, the project seems to have a new look. Old walls have been cleaned, terracotta patterns are more clearly visible under the sun, the walkways and campus around the tower have also become spacious, creating a feeling of both antiquity and closeness.
Muong Luan Tower is dating back to the 16th century. Looking back from afar, the work looks like a large pen reaching up to the blue sky. The base of the tower is square, the body of the tower gradually slopes up, creating a feeling of elegance but still full of stability. The top of the tower rises like an arrow pointing towards Vietnam, while the back leans towards Laos, as a symbol of the sustainable cultural exchange in the border region.
The highlight of the project lies in the patterns on the tower body. Dragon shapes, lotus wings or sun patterns with mirrors reflecting light still retain the sophistication of the ancient craftsmen. All are created from fired bricks and familiar materials such as lime, sand, sugarcane molasses... but enough to help the project survive for centuries.

Not only carrying architectural value, Muong Luan tower is also associated with the religious life of the Lao community here. Next to the tower, there was once a 3-compartment pagoda, which was a place for spiritual activities and traditional festivals. Although the pagoda now only has foundations, memories of the joyful festival seasons are still preserved by the people.
In April 2025, the Bun Huot Nam festival - traditional water-splashing Tet of the Lao people was restored after half a century of absence. People organize Buddha bathing ceremonies by the Ma River, along with many cultural activities such as Lam Vong dance, Lao folk songs, tug-of-war, water-splashing or tying wrist strings for good luck. After many years of interruption, the festival returns bringing new vitality to Muong Luan land.

Currently, along with the ancient tower, traditional festivals, brocade weaving, mineral springs and natural landscapes are opening up expectations for tourism development for Muong Luan. The locality aims to become an eastern tourist destination of Dien Bien province by 2030.
Through many changes of time, Muong Luan tower is still considered one of the typical works preserving the cultural, religious and historical values of the remote borderland of Dien Bien. In 1991, the work was ranked as a National-level architectural and artistic relic, becoming one of the typical cultural highlights of Muong Luan today.
