Sonny Side, culinary vlogger specializes in searching for "unusual" restaurants and specialties to enjoy and introduce to viewers. Most recently, this American YouTuber posted a video about 7 "strange" levels of Vietnamese pho in 7 different restaurants. In the video, he and two friends Calvin Bui and Thuyen Vo experience different types of pho in Ho Chi Minh City.
Roast duck pho
The first dish is roasted duck pho, pho served with roasted duck meat, broth stewed from chicken bones, anise, cinnamon, ginger, dried onions... Roasted duck pho, introduced by American Youtuber, is Pho 179, Binh Chanh district, priced at 50,000 VND/ Bowl.
Calvin Bui, a chef and businessman in Ho Chi Minh City, immediately exclaimed when he saw a bowl of duck pho: "That's wrong, pho usually uses beef and chicken."
But he was very excited to enjoy the new flavor of pho. Soft, fragrant pho noodles and roasted duck breast sprinkled with dipping sauce make the dish even more flavorful.
Fried egg pho
The owner makes fried egg pho by mixing eggs with pho noodles and then frying them crispy. Ms. Dung, the owner of the restaurant with 5 years of experience selling pho in Ho Chi Minh City, revealed the secret is to spread the pho noodles evenly on the oil pan to make the pho crispier. Fried egg noodle soup served with beef stir-fried with garlic, vegetables, tomatoes, onions and broth made from beef bones.
The second dish is fried egg pho, Thuyen Vo commented: "At first glance, it doesn't look like the pho I know because there is no broth. The fried pho is crispy and goes well with meat and vegetables. The restaurant also adds a bowl of dipping sauce. Mixed with salted vegetables, when fried pho is dipped in, the flavor balance changes very strangely.
Puffed fried pho
Meanwhile, Sonny Side and Calvin Bui went to eat fried pho . The shop owner cuts square pho noodles and fries them until they puff up like a pillow. Other ingredients are carrots, sauteed vegetables with garlic and beef and beef broth.
Sonny and Calvin not only eat each individual ingredient, they also have a new way of eating: biting a piece of pho like a bag and then putting beef, vegetables, and broth inside and enjoying.
Artichoke pho
Instead of using traditional pho, this version has pho with red artichoke flowers added so it has a striking pink color. A bowl of artichoke pho will include rice noodles, beef, beef tendons, beef ribs, herbs, onions, lemon and chili, and indispensable steamed artichokes and broth stewed from beef bones and artichokes.
Pho rolls
About 30 years ago, Pho Roll was born because one time to serve customers, the restaurant ran out of broth. The main ingredients are minced beef stir-fried with cooking oil, oyster sauce, and MSG.
As the name suggests, pho noodles are spread out, each ingredient such as lettuce, coriander, cinnamon, cooked minced beef is placed and rolled tightly to enjoy. Pho rolls often come with sweet and sour dipping sauce with salted vegetables added.
Sonny shares: “This is my favorite version of pho. The pho rolls are fresh and delicious, the noodles are soft, but as soon as you bite through, you immediately encounter the flavors of fragrant raw vegetables and minced beef, combined with a wonderful sweet and sour dipping sauce."
Satay Pho
Pho satay is a combination of Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. The restaurant and recipes were opened by Mr. Hai's father in the 80s, and now pho satay has become a famous specialty of Chinatown in Ho Chi Minh City.
A bowl of satay pho includes rice noodles, pork, tendons, bean sprouts, and raw beef, then drizzled with broth stewed from beef bones seasoned with Mr. Hai's own satay seasoning and sprinkled with green onions and pepper. Satay is made from crushed peanuts, spicy powder, turmeric powder, garlic powder... creating a rich and rich flavor for the bowl of pho.
Lobster pho
The pho dish ranked highest by Sonny Side as strange - level 7 is lobster seafood pho at Pho 2000 restaurant. The creator of this pho dish, Ms. Huynh My Truc Lien, commonly known as Ms. Dao, in 2018 was Welcoming Sonny to film a vlog and enjoy it for the first time.
The unique bowl of pho uses a whole giant lobster to prepare, boiled shrimp shells with fish bones, herbs, and spices to make broth, while shrimp meat, clams, squid, and tofu are cooked to perfection. as an ingredient to eat with pho. Bowl of pho decorated with coriander and dill.
Both Sonny and Calvin slurred and praised everything from the broth to the pho noodles. Especially when both lobster meat is served with pho noodles, it absorbs all the spicy seafood flavors and spices.
