According to typhoon news, the latest low pressure from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), a tropical depression has made landfall in the area between Trincomalee and Jaffna (northern Sri Lanka) this afternoon, January 10.
The strongest wind near the center of the tropical depression decreased to 45-50 km/h. The low pressure is forecast to have little chance of strengthening into a storm.

The low pressure area is forecast to bring heavy rain to the northern provinces, with wind speeds possibly increasing to 70 km/h. The North Central province of Sri Lanka may experience strong winds from 40-50 km/h, while the eastern province may have strong winds from 30-40 km/h. The western provinces are also expected to have strong winds from 40-50 km/h today.
It is forecast that the low pressure will cause heavy rain of more than 100mm in the eastern provinces and Uva.Nearby areas have rainfall of 50-75mm and strong winds of 50-60 km/h, including in Colombo.
Fishing and maritime activities are temporarily suspended in deep and shallow waters from Galle to Colombo, Puttalam, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa to Pothuvil.Landslide warnings are being issued for some areas in the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Matale and Badulla.
