The reason is that March 10 of the lunar calendar falls on Sunday (April 26), so workers are entitled to compensatory leave on Monday (April 27) according to the provisions of the Labor Code.
Immediately after that, the holiday schedule for April 30 - May 1, 2026 lasts for 4 days, from April 30 to May 3, thanks to the combination with the weekend. Thus, between these two holidays, there are 2 normal working days, April 28 and April 29.
Many universities have proactively announced plans to adjust the study schedule to help lecturers and students have a continuous holiday for two major holidays, the Hung Kings Commemoration Day 2026 and the April 30 - May 1 holiday.
Some universities flexibly swap study schedules. For example, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade allows lecturers and students to take continuous leave from April 26 to the end of May 1. If adding weekends before and after, the total leave time can last up to 9 consecutive days.
To ensure the training progress, the school arranges to make up for 2 days on April 28 and April 29 on the following Saturdays, specifically May 9 and May 16.
For the public sector, the holiday schedule is still implemented according to general regulations for officials, civil servants, public employees and armed forces. The exchange for consecutive holidays is only applied if there are specific instructions from functional agencies.
Meanwhile, private sector workers working 44 - 48 hours per week will implement a holiday schedule according to the Labor Code, including 1 day off for the Hung Kings Commemoration Day and 2 days off on April 30 - May 1.
According to current regulations, Vietnam has a total of 11 official holidays and Tet holidays each year, including 1 day of the Gregorian New Year, 5 days of the Lunar New Year, 1 day of Hung Kings' Death Anniversary, 2 days of April 30 - May 1, and 2 days of National Day.
Regarding holiday policies, Resolution 80 of the Politburo issued on January 7th unanimously chose November 24th every year as Vietnam Culture Day, aiming to add it as a full-wage holiday in the future. The Government has assigned relevant ministries and sectors to study and propose when amending the Labor Code.
For agencies and units implementing long holiday schedules, the requirement is to arrange on-duty forces, ensuring timely handling of arising tasks. Units without fixed weekend holiday schedules will proactively arrange to suit production and business plans.
