Cold air intensifies, hailstorms reappear in the North

Held rain reoccurs in Hanoi, Cao Bang amidst an intensified cold air mass pouring into the North.

On the night of March 31, a weak cold air wave will affect the weather in the North.

In the early morning of April 1st, hail appeared in many wards and communes, mainly in suburban areas. Meanwhile, in Cao Bang, hail accompanied by thunderstorms caused damage when it punctured and even swept away roofs of people's houses.

At about 1 am on the same day, the strongly developing convective cloud area caused hail in 28 wards and communes in Hanoi such as Yen Hoa, Vinh Hung, Gia Lam, Tu Liem, Thanh Tri, Yen Nghia, Hat Mon, An Khanh... After that, the cloud system continued to move, expanding its scope of influence and causing rain in some inner city areas, including Thanh Xuan.

According to people in Dan Phuong, ice rain appeared at about 2 am with a small size, lasting about 5 minutes and then quickly turned to heavy rain.

In Cao Bang, from 4 pm on March 31, ice rain appeared in Ha Quang commune for about 15 minutes, then spread to Minh Khai and Nam Quang communes in the evening. The size of ice rain drops ranged from 1-2 cm, combined with strong thunderstorms, causing damage to many houses. Currently, functional agencies are continuing to statistically assess damage.

According to weather forecasts from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as of 4:40 am on April 1st, convective cloud areas are still developing in a series of areas in Hanoi. Forecasts for the next 30 minutes to 3 hours, thunderstorms will continue to occur, then spread to the inner city area. In these rain spells, the risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind is still high.

This is the second time in recent days that extreme weather has appeared in the Northern region. Previously, from March 29-30, thunderstorms and hailstorms killed 6 people and injured 9 others, and caused great damage to houses, crops and infrastructure.

Meteorological experts believe that the seasonal transition from spring to summer is a time when cold air still affects, while daytime temperatures increase rapidly, creating a large temperature difference. This makes the atmosphere unstable, easily forming dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, lightning and hail in a short time but with strong intensity.

The meteorological agency recommends that people closely monitor weather forecasts, limit going out when there are thunderstorms, and proactively reinforce houses and vehicles to minimize risks caused by hail and gusts of wind.

For tourists planning to visit Hanoi and northern provinces, it is necessary to continuously update weather forecast information and cold air conditions to adjust the itinerary appropriately. In thunderstorm conditions, it is advisable to limit participating in outdoor activities, avoid areas with large trees, temporary structures and prioritize choosing indoor attractions to ensure safety.
