According to the latest weather forecast from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the weather for the 2026 Binh Ngo Lunar New Year across the country is forecast to have many fluctuations, in which the North is likely to be affected by an average to strong cold air wave right before the Kitchen Gods Tet.
Specifically, in the period from February 7 to 9 (December 20-22 of the lunar calendar), increased cold air may overflow into the North, causing widespread cold and rain. The midland and mountainous areas of the Northern region are at risk of severe cold and harmful cold, with the lowest common temperature being 12-15 degrees Celsius, and the highest during the day is about 15-18 degrees Celsius.
At the same time, the area from Ha Tinh to Da Nang and the east of provinces from Quang Ngai to Gia Lai are forecast to have rain, showers and thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain. Meanwhile, Khanh Hoa, eastern Lam Dong, the Central Highlands and Southern region have little rain, sunny during the day, and the temperature is not too high.
Cold air weakens, weather is milder before Tet
Entering the period from February 10 to 13, February 22nd (December 26th of the lunar calendar), the North continues to be affected by weak cold air, with a tendency to shift to the east around February 11th. The weather in the North during this time is cloudy, with light rain in some places, foggy in the early morning; light rain appears in coastal areas, sunny in the afternoon.
The lowest temperature in the entire North is commonly 13-16 degrees C; the highest temperature in the Northeast region is about 19-22 degrees C, while the Northwest region fluctuates from 23-26 degrees C, the cold gradually decreases compared to the previous period.
In the Central region, from February 11 to 13, there will be scattered rain at night and in the morning. The area from Thanh Hoa to Hue has the lowest temperature of 16-19 degrees C, the highest of 23-26 degrees C; the South Central Coast is the lowest of 19-22 degrees C, the highest of 26-29 degrees C.
Southern and Central Highlands weather near Tet
In the days leading up to Tet, the Central Highlands and Southern regions maintain a fairly stable weather situation. Cloudy at night and early morning, fog may appear; sunny during the day, no hot sun. The lowest temperature in the Central Highlands is commonly 14-17 degrees C, the highest is 25-28 degrees C; Southern regions have the lowest 22-25 degrees C, the highest is 30-33 degrees C. Especially in the period of February 10-11, the southern Central Highlands and Southern regions are likely to experience unseasonal rain.
Weather trends during Tet
For the main days of Lunar New Year (from February 14 to 20, i.e., December 27 to the 4th day of Tet), due to the long forecast period, there is currently only a trend assessment. Current meteorological models have not recorded signs of a new strong cold air wave appearing.
The weather in the North may maintain a cold state, light rain in some places, fog at night and in the morning, light sunshine in the afternoon. The weather in the Central, Central Highlands and Southern regions is less rainy, the weather is relatively favorable for spring travel activities.
