Ba Be Lake - ASEAN Heritage Garden, Vietnam's 3rd Ramsar Area

Ba Be Lake possesses a unique ecosystem, is the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam and is recognized as the ASEAN Heritage Garden, the 3rd Ramsar Area of Vietnam.

Located in Ba Be National Park, Ba Be Lake belongs to Thai Nguyen province (new administrative boundaries, formerly belonging to Bac Kan province), is the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam with an area of about 500ha, at an altitude of 178m above sea level. The lake has a depth of 17 - 29m, highlighted by its pristine landscape, diverse ecosystem and unique cultural and tourism values, according to the Thai Nguyen Provincial e-Portal.

From Noi Bai International Airport to Ba Be Lake is about 220km, convenient for domestic and international tourists. The lake is also about 90km from Nui Coc Lake, creating conditions to connect eco-tourism and resort routes of the Northeast region.

Ba Be is the largest natural lake in the mountains in Vietnam with outstanding ecological value and biodiversity. The rich freshwater ecosystem is home to many rare animal and plant species, including black-cheeked douc langurs.

With special conservation values, Ba Be Lake is recognized as the 3rd Ramsar area of Vietnam - a wetlands of international importance, and also an ASEAN Heritage Garden, affirming its position as a typical destination for nature conservation associated with sustainable tourism development.

Through emotional camera angles, Ba Be appears with clear blue water, majestic mountains and forests and peaceful space, contributing to promoting the image of Vietnamese nature to a large number of domestic and international tourists.

Ramsar is a wetlands of international importance according to the Ramsar Convention. As of July 2026, Vietnam has 9 Ramsar Areas, with a total area of about 120,549ha. Vietnam joined the Ramsar Convention on January 20, 1989.
