Bebinca is the 13th typhoon to hit China this year, starting to sweep across Shanghai at around 7:30 a.m. on September 16, according to the Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory.
The storm had maximum winds of 151km/h near its eye, making landfall in the Lingang area of Pudong District, Shanghai.
CCTV reported that all flights at Shanghai's two main airports were canceled from 8 p.m. on September 15 due to the storm.
"Due to the impact of Typhoon Bebinca, traffic capacity at Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao international airports has been reduced since September 15," CCTV said.
Most ferries to and from Chongming Island - China's third largest island, known as the "gateway to the Yang Zi River", have stopped operating.
Shanghai Railway Station also suspended passenger trains on some routes passing through the city from September 15 to 16.
Shanghai amusement parks such as Jinjiang Amusement Park and Shanghai Wildlife Park have been temporarily closed.
Shanghai Disney Resort said Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown and Wishing Star Park will be closed on September 16. However, the two resort hotels will still provide services to guests. Entertainment and recreational activities are expected to resume on September 17.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, Typhoon Bebinca could cause greater impacts after it makes landfall, with winds and rain expected to intensify on the night of September 16.
The National Flood and Drought Prevention and Control Headquarters activated a level IV emergency response in eastern China's Anhui Province on September 15, while raising the emergency response in Shanghai and Zhejiang to level III.
Bebinca is said to be the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai in 75 years, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain to the city. Images posted on social media showed uprooted trees and toppled lampposts.
The typhoon officially made landfall on the second day of the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday. Local authorities advised residents and visitors to stay indoors and only go out if absolutely necessary.
Due to the storm, some flights from Vietnam to Shanghai on September 16 were also delayed/cancelled. Vietnam Airlines announced that 4 flights between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Shanghai, including VN522, VN523, VN530, VN531, had to delay their departure time by more than 5 hours.
Tourists are advised to carefully check weather information, updated travel time and schedule changes from tour operators, airlines or high-speed trains if planning to travel to Shanghai during this period.
