How unusual is Typhoon No. 3 Yagi?

Super typhoon Yagi has an unusually rapid intensification process, rare in Vietnam's meteorological history.

Typhoon No. 3 Yagi is forecast to be the strongest super typhoon in the Northwest Pacific region in 2024, with maximum wind speed and large circulation. When approaching Hainan Island (China), Yagi maintained wind speeds of up to 240km/h. When entering the Gulf of Tonkin, the storm's intensity is forecast to decrease to level 13-14, but is still very dangerous as winds can gust to level 17.

Typhoon Yagi formed from a tropical depression off the coast of the Philippines and was locally named Enteng. Meanwhile, most storms originate in the Northwest Pacific and weaken as they enter the South China Sea like regular super typhoons.

After making landfall on the coast of Luzon (Philippines), causing heavy damage, typhoon Yagi continued to strengthen due to warm sea temperatures.

This is also the fastest-strengthening super typhoon in history, increasing by one level every 3 hours on average, reaching level 16 in just 48 hours. Specifically, on September 2, when it made landfall in the East Sea, Yagi reached level 8, but just 2 days later it strengthened by 8 levels, quickly reaching super typhoon level.

Typhoon Yagi maintained its level 16 intensity for more than a day, which is a long time for a typhoon in the East Sea and has never been recorded in history.

Super typhoon Yagi is considered the strongest typhoon in the past 30 years to operate in the East Sea and make landfall in Vietnam.

For the first time, authorities have issued a level 4 disaster risk in the Gulf of Tonkin. This is the third time Vietnam has recorded this level of risk in history.

On the afternoon of September 7, storm Yagi will make landfall in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Due to the influence of storm No. 3's circulation, Bach Long Vi Island has strong winds of level 13, gusts of level 14; Co To Island has strong winds of level 13, gusts of level 16; Tien Yen (Quang Ninh) strong winds of level 9, gusts of level 11; Dam Ha (Quang Ninh) strong winds of level 10, gusts of level 13; Cua Ong (Quang Ninh) strong winds of level 12, gusts of level 14; Bai Chay (Quang Ninh) strong winds of level 14, gusts of level 17; Phu Lien (Hai Phong) strong winds of level 8, gusts of level 10; Cat Hai (Hai Phong) strong winds of level 7, gusts of level 10; Dong Xuyen (Hai Phong) strong winds of level 9, gusts of level 10; Ba Lat (Thai Binh) strong winds of level 8, gusts of level 10,...

The first area expected to be affected by storm Yagi is between Quang Ninh and Hai Phong.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha chaired a meeting of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control with ministries, branches and localities on the afternoon of September 5 to deploy response work to storm No. 3 (international name Yagi).

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha requested localities to resolutely implement solutions to evacuate people in vulnerable areas, those still on aquaculture cages, on boats anchored near the shore, and tourists still on coastal islands.

On September 5, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung signed and issued an Official Dispatch on proactively responding to storm No. 3 in 2024.

The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism requests the Directors of the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Departments of Tourism in the above localities to proactively coordinate closely with local authorities to review, count, proactively inform and guide boats and means of tourism activities at sea to know, not to enter or exit dangerous areas or to return to safe shelters; deploy evacuation and shelter measures to ensure safety for tourists.

Along with that, it is necessary to check, review and implement plans to ensure safety for people and property at cultural and sports institutions, historical - cultural relics, scenic spots, tourist areas and spots in the area; based on the actual situation and the possibility of storms and floods, proactively decide or advise competent authorities to direct the temporary suspension of entertainment, recreation and tourism activities in the locality.
