Super Typhoon Yagi is the strongest typhoon to hit Hainan (China) in the past 10 years. The storm has entered the strait between Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan Island, weakening in intensity. Although it is no longer a super typhoon, the eye of the storm is still clear and the storm structure is not broken.

More than 410,000 people in Hainan have been evacuated ahead of the storm. Guangdong, a southern province, has evacuated more than 570,000 residents. Typhoon Yagi is expected to make landfall in Guangdong province for a second time on the evening of September 6.

In Haikou, the capital of Hainan province, the streets were deserted as people stayed indoors to avoid the storm, according to images from social media. Between 1949 and 2023, 106 typhoons have hit Hainan, but only nine were classified as super typhoons.

Typhoon Yagi has already caused a series of serious impacts. Schools and offices in affected areas such as Hainan, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau (China) were closed and a series of flights were canceled.

Flight operations are expected to resume to 80% of normal levels at Hong Kong International Airport (China).
