The project marks a leap forward in aviation technology, when for the first time in Vietnam, many of the world's leading advanced operational technologies will be applied synchronously.
The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project is consulted by CPG Consultants and Artelia Airport, the world's leading airport design units headquartered in Singapore and France. Setting a target of reaching the finish line before APEC 2027 and with a total investment of nearly 22,000 billion VND, the airport is expected to bring a world-class, seamless and smart experience, contributing to raising the position of Phu Quoc destination right from the "gateway".
To meet the goal of welcoming 20 million visitors/year, the airport general management model (Total Airport Management - TAM) will be deployed in Phu Quoc. This is a comprehensive solution to integrate all airport operations, from the land (landside) to the airside (airside), from passenger traffic management, luggage, to flight coordination and security, helping to optimize operations, reduce interruptions, improve performance and passenger experience.
Thus, passengers will be notified via display or mobile application about queuing time, changing exit gate... so as not to waste waiting time. Airports can coordinate additional human resources, open more counters or adjust passenger flows based on real-time data, helping to reduce congestion. Traffic in front of the station from buses, taxis, and pick-up and drop-offs is also coordinated smoothly, limiting congestion in the ground area.
Passengers coming and going through Phu Quoc International Airport in the future will experience a seamless, contactless journey, thanks to the integration of biometric technology at every touch point: from check-in, security screening, to boarding an airline and automatic luggage counters. Identification authentication by just faces or fingerprints helps increase processing speed to only 15-20 seconds/person, reduce queuing, and ensure personal information security.
Another breakthrough is the luggage handling system. For traveling bags, Phu Quoc will apply Individual Carrier System (ICS), a modern baggage transportation system, in which each bag will be placed separately in an independent tray. This allows for accurate tracking up to 99.99% of the journey of each luggage package, minimizing lost or delayed items.
For arrival baggage, the airport will use a large capacity side lane, integrated with automatic scanning technology and warning labels for suspicious baggage. This not only speeds up the handling process but also helps reduce congestion at the exit, a common problem at many international airports today. Customs officers will not need to sit at each scanning machine because the image will be sent to the centralized center, reducing the number of operating personnel.
Phu Quoc International Airport will be expanded to more than 100 parking locations, including 71 locations directly connected to modern cages. Here, a direct fuel supply system at the parking location will be applied by underground handling, instead of using tankers moving as usual. This system not only ensures safer safety, but also helps reduce emissions, noise and rounding time for each flight.
More than 20 departure and arrival luggage islands are operated at the same time. Thus, airports will also be able to receive more flights at the same time during good times, limiting late afternoon and night flights.
There are only 18 months left to complete the project, ahead of APEC 2027. Mr. Bui Thanh Trung, Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region, pledged: We understand that these are not only projects serving the success of APEC 2027, but also strategic infrastructure projects, creating an important driving force for Phu Quoc to make a breakthrough.
Therefore, we are committed to mobilizing the highest level of resources, focusing highly to implement correctly, even exceeding the schedule, ensuring the highest economic efficiency for Phu Quoc International Airport and 2 APEC projects that were granted investment decisions, as well as projects that were later trusted.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee shared: "To successfully organize APEC 2027, Phu Quoc must have a modern, synchronous, and international-class infrastructure platform. Phu Quoc International Airport is a key project, which needs to be completed before the second quarter of 2027, to ensure the capacity to welcome international delegations. This project will contribute a long-term role in shaping the development, connection and integration space of Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, and Vietnam in the future.
The expansion project with a total investment of "huge", combined with current world-class leading technologies will put Phu Quoc International Airport on par with the most modern airports today.
This is a strategic step for Sun Group in upgrading tourism infrastructure, strongly connecting Phu Quoc with regional and international aviation centers, contributing to making Phu Quoc a new tourism - economic center of the world in the future.
