The 3rd Shanghai International Light Festival in 2026 officially takes place from September 17 to October 16 with the theme "Shanghai Light, World Movement".
This annual visual arts and culture event kicks off a large-scale nighttime economic stimulus chain throughout the city, combining lighting installation art and modern artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
This year's festival is designed with 1 central area in Huangpu district (Shanghai, China) and 16 satellite festivals spread throughout the inner and outer districts. A total of 158 activities with diverse themes will serve the public throughout a month.
Most outdoor experience spaces are open completely free of charge for residents and tourists.
The highlight of the festival is located in the Dien Trung green space and the Shanghai Bund area. Here, visitors can admire 24 creative light artworks hidden harmoniously in the ecological urban landscape architecture.
Notably, AI interaction technology creates a special attraction with the experience of light communication around the base of a 120-year-old ancient tree, along with a transforming light path that automatically blooms with each step of tourists.
In addition, the Shanghai Concert Hall square also offers light performances combined with multi-layered visual music, turning the heritage space into an eye-catching night art party.
Lasting for a month, the event is expected to become a prominent tourism highlight, creating a strong motivation to attract millions of domestic and international tourists to Shanghai this fall, thereby adding momentum to the consumption and nighttime economic service picture of this bustling city.
