A narrow channel leading into Kavirondo Bay has an average width of 16 miles (25km), 40 miles (64km) east of Kisumu, Kenya.
The cities of Kampala and Entebbe in Uganda are located along or near the northern shore of the lake. At the southeast corner of the lake is Speke Bay and the southwest corner is Emin Pasha Bay. Among the countless islands in the lake, Ukerewe Island, located north of Speke Bay, is the largest, with tree hills 200m above the lake.

In the northwest corner of the lake are 62 islands of the Sese archipelago with outstanding natural beauty. In addition, the area around the lake also has many prehistoric relics.
