Of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam in 2024, the number of visitors arriving by air accounted for more than 14.8 million (84.4%), by road nearly 2.5 million (14.2%) and by sea 248,100 (1.4%).
In terms of region, international visitors from Asia accounted for the largest proportion (79.6%), followed by Europe (11.3%), America (5.7%) and Africa (0.3%).
South Korea remains the largest market sending visitors to Vietnam with 4.5 million arrivals (25.98%). The top 9 markets after South Korea are China with 3.7 million arrivals, Taiwan (China) (1.29 million arrivals), the US (780,000 arrivals), Japan (711,000 arrivals), India (501,000 arrivals), Malaysia (495,000 arrivals), Australia (491,000 arrivals), Cambodia (475,000 arrivals) and Thailand (418,000 arrivals).
In particular, in recent times, the Indian market has seen remarkable growth from 138,000 arrivals in 2022 to 501,000 arrivals in 2024 (an increase of 2.6 times in just 2 years). The figures show that India is gradually becoming a potential market, contributing to the diversification of the source market for the Vietnamese tourism industry.
In terms of recovery compared to 2019 (before the Covid-19 pandemic), the European region reached 92%, while the Americas reached 103% and Oceania exceeded with 125%.
In Asia, India recorded a spectacular growth of 297% compared to before the pandemic. Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia (173%), Laos (151%) and the Philippines (148%) had positive results.
However, traditional tourist markets such as China and Japan have only recovered 64% and 75%, while Thailand and Malaysia have both recovered 82%.
The results of welcoming international visitors in 2024 show that Vietnam's tourism industry has completed the very ambitious goal set at the beginning of the year, growing nearly 40% compared to 2023.
According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, in 2025 the tourism industry will focus on further exploiting potential markets such as India, strengthening links with airlines to open more direct flights, and promoting international cooperation in tourism promotion and advertising.
With the current growth momentum, Vietnam's tourism industry aims to reach 22 - 23 million international visitors, and directly contribute 6-8% to GDP, with revenue of about 980 - 1,050 billion VND.
