On February 13, a video clip of live larvae crawling in a student’s food tray went viral on social media. The incident is said to have occurred at Wellspring Saigon International Bilingual School.
In the afternoon of the same day, speaking with Lao Dong, a representative of Wellspring Saigon International Bilingual School confirmed that the incident occurred during lunchtime on February 12.
This person said that during the lunch break, a student discovered larvae in the tray (located in the compartment containing the pan-fried salmon dish), then recorded a video. The incident was also reported to the school at that time.
According to the school representative, as soon as the information was received, the school checked, extracted the camera, and reviewed the entire process of preparing the menu of dishes in that day's meal.
The menu for February 12 includes vegetable soup with minced meat, spaghetti with minced beef sauce, salmon sauteed with rosemary, white rice, mashed potatoes, egg salad, red plums (for primary school students), and Phan Rang green apples (for secondary school students).
"After inspection, the school determined that the larvae were likely to come from green apples (because the apple compartment was next to the pan-fried salmon compartment). Because the larvae were alive, and the other foods were cooked, it was very unlikely that the larvae would be in food such as salmon or potatoes... In addition, apples are fresh fruits that are at risk of naturally containing larvae even after being processed. When checking the remaining apples in the distribution area, the kitchen staff also discovered that some apples had larvae," he said.
According to a representative of Wellspring Saigon International Bilingual School, after the incident, the school sent a notice to all students and parents about the incident. At the same time, they invited local health agencies and police to come and check. "Today, February 13, all students in the school still have lunch as usual," this person said.
