With an average price across countries of 64,300 VND/kg, the price of live pigs has "cooled down" by about 5 prices compared to more than a month ago. However, the price of pork sold at local markets is still as high as a month ago.
Talking to Lao Dong reporter to explain why small businesses do not lower meat prices even though the price of live pigs has decreased, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang (pork business in Mai Dich, Cau Giay, Hanoi) said: The price of live pigs has decreased, But the price of hook meat at slaughterhouses and wholesale markets is still high, around 95,000-97,000 VND/kg.
“Currently, the epidemic in pig herds is quite complicated, so there are not many pigs on small-scale farms. CP's live pigs are sold at 68,000 VND/kg, so retailers cannot reduce prices to avoid losses" - Mr. Quang said.
Ms. Tran Thi Thu Ha (pork trader at Cua Dong market, Vinh, Nghe An) also said that normally, small businesses only adjust retail meat prices up/down if the price of live pigs fluctuates at a high level.
“If the price of live pigs increases/decreases by about 10,000 VND/kg, the price of pork at the market will be adjusted up/down accordingly. If below that level, pork prices will remain unchanged. Furthermore, it is better to keep meat prices stable rather than increasing or decreasing the same price every day, causing anxiety for consumers" - Ms. Ha said.
