The ticket to the final for the Vietnamese team was determined after the team won against Malaysia 2-0 in the second leg of the semi-finals on the evening of August 19. Previously, coach Kim Sang-sik's team also won with the same score away from home, thereby ending the two matches with a total score of 4-0.
Meanwhile, the Thai team defeated Singapore with a total score of 3-2. After winning 3-1 in the first leg, the Golden Temple team suffered a 1-2 defeat in the second leg but still maintained the advantage to advance to the final match.
This is the 2nd consecutive time Vietnam and Thailand have faced each other in the ASEAN Cup final. The two teams met in the 2024 final, when Vietnam won both matches with scores of 2-1 and 3-2 to be crowned champions.
According to the schedule, the first leg final of ASEAN Cup 2026 takes place at 8:00 PM on August 22nd at Rajamangala Stadium, Thailand.
Four days later, the two teams returned to My Dinh Stadium to play the second leg at 8:00 PM on August 26.
