Set in a fictional constitutional monarchy, the movie "Perfect crown" revolves around the love story between Seong Hui Joo (IU) - the female heir to a tycoon corporation and Prince Lee Ahn (Byeon Woo Seok).
In the film, IU's character is introduced as the young CEO of Castle Group - one of the largest corporations in Korea, possessing sharp intelligence and strong ambition.
However, according to Korean media, this is also a major controversial point of the film. Despite constantly appearing in meetings, managing work and giving instructions to subordinates, Hui Joo is still commented on for lacking the image of a true leader.
Many opinions suggest that most of the office scenes of the character only revolve around putting pressure or emotional arguments with employees, instead of showing the ability to handle crises or make strategic decisions.
Korean newspapers commented that the gap between character building and what the film actually shows makes Hui Joo's image of a powerful businesswoman unconvincing, mainly creating the impression of a sensitive and easily losing emotional control boss.
This is further compared to many recent Korean films exploiting the image of successful women, including the character Hong Hae In of Kim Ji Won in the movie "Queen of Tears"; Yoon Se Ri of Son Ye Jin in "Landing You"...
In fact, audiences today are no longer only interested in the love life of the female lead but are increasingly paying attention to the career, ambition and personal abilities of the characters. In particular, female audiences aged 20-30 tend to empathize more with images that know how to balance work and love.
From this perspective, "Queen of the 21st Century Army" is considered not to have made good use of the female businesswoman setting that the film built for IU.
