Inspired by childhood memories and Indonesian culture, the work is considered by Adriandhy as a "grateful gift" for children in her hometown.
The journey to bring Jumbo to the screen lasted 5 years, gathering more than 400 creative personnel. The film is produced using open source animation software Blender, with a bright pastel color scheme and each frame is carefully cared for. Adriandhy believes that the biggest challenge is to create every detail from zero, like make kuelapis which requires patience and meticulousness.
The work is imbued with Indonesian identity with the image of panjat pinang festival, a brilliant mobile restaurant, handwritten signs and a red brick-roofed house. The dialogue uses many regional languages, helping the story to be both familiar and reflective of cultural diversity.
The film tells the story of Don - an orphan living with his grandmother (Voice of Ratna Riantiarno), attached to his parents' fairy tale. When the book was taken away by his classmate atta (M. Adhiyat), Don and two close friends set off to find it. They meet Meri (Quinn Salman) a girl from another university and gradually discover hidden corners in each persons past.
It is noteworthy that atta is not only a " bully" but also reflects the damage and economic pressure of the family. The story touches sensitive topics such as bullying in school, loss and loneliness, but is told lightly, suitable for both children and adults.
The title track Selalu Ada di Nadimu (Always in your beat), performed by Prince Poetiray and Quinn Salman, is a emotional highlight, reminiscent of a loved one who has passed away.
Launched on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, Jumbo attracted more than 140,000 views after 3 days, and was shown in 500 domestic theaters and 17 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Türkiye. The work is highly appreciated by experts and audiences, opening up new hope for the Indonesian animation industry in the international market.
Director Adriandhy shared: Hopefully this debut film will be a stepping stone and a standard for Indonesian animation in the future.
