Talking with MC Minh Ngoc, Tuan Kiet said that he used to be an "amateur" actor, not formally trained before stepping onto a professional stage. His first role at 5B stage put a lot of pressure on him when he was assigned to take on the comedy segment in a tragic play with the participation of many veteran artists.
The actor recalled that time, he almost didn't know how to stand on stage in a spoken drama to be in sync with the rhythm and emotions. However, it was the frank advice from his seniors that helped him mature more in the profession.
According to Tuan Kiet, the most important thing he learned is that the audience comes to the stage to see the fate of the character and the story, not to see the actor show off himself. From there, he practices observing the audience's reaction each night to adjust the tempo, dialogue and performance energy to suit each performance.
One of Tuan Kiet's biggest milestones is the role of the Hunchback in the play Dem vuon hu. This psychologically charged role brought him a Silver Medal at the Ho Chi Minh City Drama Festival 2024. This is also a milestone that helps the male actor become more confident with roles with deep inner feelings.
Tuan Kiet believes that acting does not always need to show intense emotions. Sometimes, restraint and moderation are the factors that make the character touch the audience's emotions. For him, just completing the right role in the overall story is enough to create an impression.
The interesting thing in the actor's sharing is the "two egos" thinking when working. On the one hand, he must live fully with the character to maintain true emotions. On the other hand, he must still be alert enough to observe the camera, stage and audience reactions to control performance techniques.
Although loved for his humorous and eloquent roles, Tuan Kiet said he wants to try his hand at many characters with less dialogue and more introverted in the future. The actor hopes that in the next 5-10 years, the audience will remember him as a talented actor who can balance both comedy and tragedy.
In addition to artistic activities, Tuan Kiet also cherishes a plan to open acting training classes to support young people who started from scratch like him before.
