Vu Minh Quang won a scholarship worth more than half a billion from Youngstown State University (USA) thanks to an essay about his personality and interests.

An impressive track record

Since his junior high school years, Vu Minh Quang (currently a 12th grade student at Newton Inter-level School) has shown a special passion for science and innovation. Minh Quang began his journey to conquer major awards such as the Gold Medal at the "International Invention and Trade Expo 2020" with the product "Smokeless Smoking House". This invention demonstrates innovative thinking and emphasizes the social responsibility of each individual in protecting public health.

Not stopping there, Quang continued to make his mark with the product "A wearable soft device for assistance in arm and hand rehabilitation" - a device to support hand and arm rehabilitation and won the Gold Medal at "Euroinvent European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation 2023". Quang's inventions are not only theoretical but also have high potential for application in life.

Not only excelling in science, the male student also has a passion for art, especially dancing. Minh Quang is a member of the organizing committee of the program "Music Show 2023: Carving by N.A.F (Newton Artist Fam)" which attracted more than 300 audiences. He is also the head of the art department in two school programs - "Fiesta 2023" and "BAY 2024: Reunion".

Minh Quang is also the champion of Newton Flashmob Championship for two consecutive years 2023 and 2024; participating in the organizing committee of the showcase "Illusion" 2022 and "Upstream" 2023.

"Dancing helps me find my own personality, I also apply this to scientific products so that they are not dry but full of creativity," Minh Quang said.

Journey to conquer the dream of studying abroad

Since finishing 9th grade, Minh Quang has set a goal to study abroad in the US through a scholarship. With his continuous efforts throughout 3 years of high school, Quang chose Youngstown State University - a public university ranked among the best universities in the US (according to Forbes).

"The school has many clubs, which suit my extroverted personality. I think the school will also be a good environment to help me develop and satisfy my passion," Quang said.

Quang's application preparation process lasted three years, from studying for IELTS and SAT certificates to participating in extracurricular activities. The 2007 student admitted that there were times when he faced a lot of pressure when having to balance between studying and participating in activities.

Quang said: “Grade 10 was the most stressful period. After school, I spent the whole evening practicing dancing for shows. At 9pm, I went home and continued studying until 1am to make sure I kept my grades up.”

In his essay, the student chose to write about his personal development journey and emphasized the connection between his passion for art and his scientific achievements. The essay was highly appreciated for its personality and creativity.

Minh Quang shared: “I don’t have any special secret other than always trying and taking advantage of every opportunity to develop myself comprehensively. I think my passion for dancing helps me a lot, such as training my concentration and perseverance skills, and at the same time giving me an artistic perspective to apply to science."

Currently, Quang has received a scholarship from Youngstown State with a support of more than half a billion VND. However, the 2k7 male student revealed that he is still trying to achieve a higher scholarship. Quang will also try to achieve the highest results in the high school graduation exam next year as well as consider domestic universities.
