On May 28, Bach Mai Hospital organized a scientific conference on "Advances in medicine" and celebrated the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the departments: Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Trauma and Spine; along with departments: Social work, Quality Management.
Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co - Director of Bach Mai Hospital emphasized: "Advances in medicine are only truly meaningful when effectively applied in treatment, prevention and improving the quality of life for patients". As the first special-class general hospital in the country, Bach Mai has affirmed its role as the leading flag of the Vietnamese healthcare industry with comprehensive development, especially in the high-tech era.
If Bach Mai was previously known for its strength in internal and paraclinical specialties, in recent years, surgery specialties - especially Neurological Surgery, Orthopedic Trauma and Spine - have made great strides, becoming a bright spot in the national health system.
The Department of Neurosurgery, established in May 2015, has become one of the pioneers in the treatment of central neurological diseases such as brain tumors, cerebral vascular malformations, vayrology, traumatic brain injury and spinal diseases. Notably, the department has successfully performed hundreds of emergency surgeries for cerebral aneurysm rupture and is the first place in Vietnam to implement surgery to treat aneurysms by less invasive surgery. In addition, complex endoscopic surgery, skull surgery, and treatment of motor - cerebral vein deformities by coordinating vasoconstriction and open surgery have been applied regularly.
Meanwhile, the Department of Orthopedic and Spinal Trauma has mastered a series of modern techniques such as: surgery for high cervical spine damage, gluteal - scoliosis, replacement of the previous diaphragm joint, replacement of discs and the body of the artificial spine, endoscopy of the knee joint, shoulder joint, ankle joint...
In particular, this is the first unit in Vietnam to apply the O-arm system in spinal surgery, with nearly 1,000 cases performed. The department has also performed knee replacement surgery with Mako robots for more than 100 patients. In 2024, a new milestone was set when doctors successfully performed the first endoscopic direct attraction of tooth decay - a step forward in the treatment of complex cervical spine diseases.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the units, Bach Mai Hospital also opened the Consulting and Vaccination Unit under the Institute of Tropical Medicine, expanding preventive health care services for the community.
