On December 30th, information from Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that the unit had just successfully treated a child with a very rare gallbladder torsion.
The patient is a 3-year-old girl, admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain around the navel. Through examination and ultrasound, doctors suspected that the child had acute gallbladder inflammation. However, the results of the abdominal CT scan later confirmed a more dangerous diagnosis: Gallbladder twist.
Immediately, the patient was prescribed emergency endoscopic surgery. During the intervention, the surgical team was surprised to record that the patient's gallbladder was twisted to 720 degrees (2 circles) in the opposite direction of the clock. Due to being twisted too tightly, the gallbladder turned purple-black due to necrosis due to anemia.

Doctors proceeded to remove the necrotic gallbladder quickly. Thanks to timely intervention, the patient's health recovered well and he was discharged from the hospital after 7 days of treatment.
Doctors recommend that gallbladder torsion does not respond to conventional or drainage medical treatment. Surgery is the only and optimal method to save the patient's life.
Parents need to pay special attention when children have symptoms of acute abdominal pain or around the navel. Taking children to medical facilities with pediatric surgery and modern diagnostic imaging equipment is a vital factor to detect early rare anatomical abnormalities, help timely intervention and avoid unfortunate complications.
