The patient was admitted to the hospital with an abnormally swollen abdomen. Through clinical examination and ultrasound at the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, doctors recorded a large cyst with many walls, uneven fluid with a size of about 250x300mm, occupying almost the entire abdominal cavity.
Recognizing this as a high-risk case, which may progress complicatedly, doctors quickly consulted and prescribed surgery early to avoid dangerous complications.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Nguyen Van Thang - Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Oncology and his team. Sharing about this special case, Dr. Thang said that this is a rare case because the tumor is too large, containing about 6 liters of mucus and is malignant.
The tumor originated from one side of the patient's ovary. With the characteristic of large mucosal tumors and cancer risk, we could not perform it by endoscopy but had to perform open surgery to ensure safety as well as adhere to the principles of cancer treatment," Dr. Nguyen Van Thang said.
During the surgery, the team completely removed the ovary containing the malignant tumor. However, doctors still made efforts to preserve the remaining uterus and ovaries in order to maintain fertility for the patient in the future.
According to doctors, the biggest difficulty of the surgery was the risk of tumor rupture during operation, which could spread malignant cells to the abdominal cavity. Thanks to professional experience and close coordination of the surgical team, the surgery took place safely, and the tumor was successfully removed.
After surgery, the patient's health was stable, recovered well and is continuing to be monitored. Currently, the patient is waiting for complete biopsy results, but it is highly likely that chemotherapy will not be needed.
Doctors also recommend that when children have signs of abnormal abdominal enlargement, prolonged abdominal pain or digestive disorders of unknown cause, parents should take their children to the doctor early to detect and treat dangerous diseases in a timely manner.
