HCMC - Children's Hospital 2 has just successfully received and removed a child with a 23x23mm long sharp piece of fish bone and bone stuck in the esophagus.

Information from specialist 2 Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - Deputy Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Children's Hospital 2 - said that patient N.T.N (4 years old, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) was admitted to the hospital with inflammation and esophageal edema due to fish bone stroking.

According to the child's father, when feeding the child with sai fish, although the family had carefully filtered the bones, a piece of bone around it still remained. Unfortunately, the child swallowed this foreign object. Timely detection, the family took the child to a local hospital for first aid and then transferred him to Children's Hospital 2 for further treatment.

Here, the child was shown an X-ray and CT scan, and discovered a foreign object stuck in the esophagus. Doctors quickly performed an emergency endoscopy and successfully removed the foreign object. Two days later, the child's health was stable and he was discharged from the hospital.

Doctor Thu Thuy said that foreign object snoring in children is a dangerous condition, especially when the foreign object is sharp or corrosive. These foreign objects can cause complications such as perforation or bloating. common objects in cases of foreign object swallowing include: coins, chamomile batteries, magnetes, toothbrushes, medicine and bones.

The treatment of digestive foreign objects depends on many factors such as the child's age, type of foreign object, location in the digestive tract, swallowing duration and clinical symptoms. Most foreign bodies can be eliminated without intervention, but about 10 - 20% of cases require endoscopy and 1% require surgery.

Signs when children swallow foreign objects can include: vomiting, bloating, neck pain, painful swallowing, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, bloating... When seeing these manifestations, parents need to take their children to a medical facility immediately.

Doctor Thuy notes that foreign objects in the esophagus or stomach with dangerous properties need special attention such as: sharp foreign objects, batteries; large-sized foreign objects (division over 2.5 cm or length over 2.5 cm in children under 5 years old, length over 5 cm in adults); foreign objects such as super absorbent polymer...

To prevent foreign object bites, parents should keep small objects away from children's reach, observe children while playing, and avoid letting children play with items with magnetes or small sizes. Absolutely do not let children play around while eating.

When detecting children swallowing foreign objects, adults need to stay calm, not look for ways to hook foreign objects because they can push the foreign object deeper. Absolutely do not give your child medicine, do not cause vomiting or vomiting stimulation because it can cause further damage or cause foreign objects to enter the airway.
