Dak Lak coffee changes to increase competitiveness in the market

THANH QUỲNH |

Dak Lak - The coffee industry is facing many challenges. Experts recommend changing to increase competitiveness in the market.

Many challenges

Dak Lak is the coffee capital of the country with more than 212,000 hectares and an output of about 354,000 tons.

Coffee has grown strongly in Dak Lak thanks to fertile land and favorable climate. However, this crop is now facing many major challenges due to climate change.

First of all, it must be mentioned that the erratic rainy and sunny weather causes crop failure, affecting coffee quality. The land has been seriously degraded due to outdated cultivation. This reduces coffee quality, affecting the product's reputation in the international market.

In addition, the coffee industry is facing fierce competition from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia...

Coffee prices on the international market fluctuate frequently.Consumer tastes have also changed. In particular, consumers are increasingly focusing on product quality and origin. This requires coffee products to ensure high quality and food safety.

Many coffee importing countries set strict standards. For example, the EU, which accounts for 41% of Vietnam's coffee exports, has issued anti-deforestation regulations (EUDR).

The EU also requires traceability of products, ensuring that they are not related to deforestation after December 31, 2020.

Towards sustainable farming

Faced with challenges, many farmers in Dak Lak have changed their farming methods. Mr. Nguyen An Son (village 6, Ea Kpam commune, Cu M'gar district) applies a drip irrigation system, helping to save water, optimize fertilizers and control pesticides.

The drip irrigation system helps provide water directly to the roots of the plant, minimizing loss caused by evaporation and overflow irrigation. In the dry season, the benefits of saving water are very clear" - Mr. Son shared.

Mr. Le Van Quan (Ea Kao commune, Buon Ma Thuot city) also installed a drip irrigation system when replanting coffee.

"My well has little water, if it continues to overflow, it won't be enough. The cost of installing a drip irrigation system is high but brings long-term benefits. I can fertilize and protect plants more effectively, save time and reduce fertilizer intake, protect the environment," said Mr. Quan.

Mr. Trinh Duc Minh - Chairman of Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association said that to overcome challenges, the coffee industry needs to continue to develop sustainably.

According to Mr. Minh, coffee farmers need to apply science and technology and practice smart farming. This is to reduce costs, improve quality and competitiveness in the market.
