At present, farmers in the provinces and cities of the Western region are focusing on taking care of flowers and ornamental plants of all kinds, in time to serve the market during the Lunar New Year of At Ty in 2025. Particularly in Long Tuyen ward, Binh Thuy district - famous for having a large area of flower and ornamental plants in Can Tho city, gardeners are also urgently taking care of them to produce quality products.
This year, the family of Ms. Phung Thi Trang (47 years old, Binh Thuong B area) - a gardener with nearly 20 years of experience growing Tet flowers, maintains growing nearly 1,500 pots of various flowers, including 500 large pots of marigolds (12 plants/pot).
Ms. Trang confided that fortunately after the unseasonal rain, the flowers in her house were still healthy and the plants were lush, so everyone breathed a sigh of relief. However, there were also many fallen and dead plants. Currently, the family takes care of the flowers by watering them twice a day, adding fertilizer and chemicals, and splitting bamboo splints to secure them.
"The current situation is no longer worrying, but what I'm nervous about is whether the sales will be better than last year. Because in reality, in recent years, people no longer spend lavishly on home decoration, but only buy 1-2 pots for the sake of it.
My family invested more than 40 million VND in flowers, took care of them for more than 2 months, and the profit was less than 20 million VND like every year. We can only hope that this year people will accept them, buy more flowers, and have a decent and full Tet holiday" - Ms. Trang said.
Instead of having yellow daisies, hanging coconut flowers, sunflowers, and Da Lat daisies like previous years, this year, Ms. Trang's family mainly focuses on marigolds. Similarly, the land next to Ms. Trang's house also limits sunflower planting like last year.
Just like Ms. Trang's family, in the 2025 Tet flower crop, Mr. Nguyen Van Truyen's family (50 years old, Can Tho) did not risk growing a lot, and may not even bring flowers to the city center to sell for fear of "loss".
“My family is still hesitant to find a place to sell flowers in the city center because the demand for ornamental flowers is not as good as before. These past few days, when I took flowers to the market, I saw that most of them were sold at a medium price, ranging from 150,000 - 400,000 VND/pot.
This year, my garden has more than 300 pots of bougainvillea, with prices ranging from 100,000 VND to 15,000,000 VND. The 6-color bonsai bougainvillea costs over 20,000,000 VND. With a large investment, I hope my family will win big this year," Mr. Truyen shared.
In addition to Tet ornamental flowers, Can Tho farmers are also urgently taking care of "unique" shaped fruits such as coconuts printed with the words "wealth - fortune", gold bar grapefruit, gold bar watermelon,... with the expectation of selling them at high prices.
