On August 1, the Investigation Police Agency of Tay Ninh Province Police announced that it had issued a decision to prosecute Nguyen Tan Loi (born in 1990, from Dong Thap Province) for the act of "Theft of property", according to the provisions of Clause 2, Article 173 of the Penal Code.
Previously, the police received a report from a household in Hau Nghia commune, Tay Ninh province about being broken into and having their money stolen.
According to the homeowner's statement, this is the amount of money they have accumulated over a long period of time, kept at a photocopy shop but not counted regularly, so they do not know exactly how much the specific amount is but only estimate it.
Immediately after receiving the report, the Investigation Police Agency quickly took action to verify, collect evidence, and at the same time trace the subject.
Unexpectedly, on July 22, 2025, a young man went to Vinh Long Provincial Police to surrender and confess to being the one who committed the above theft.
Through verification, the subject's name was Nguyen Tan Loi, without a stable job, without a clear place to live, and had been wandering for many years.
According to initial statements, at around 2:00 a.m. on July 18, Loi passed by a photocopy shop in Hau Nghia commune and discovered that the door had only been locked inside, without a lock. Seeing the loopholes, Loi had the intention of stealing.
The subject gently uncked the checkpoint, sneaked inside, searched and discovered some cash deposits stored in the cabinet. Lot stated that the total amount of money stolen was about 137 million VND, with many different denominations.
After stealing the property, Loi hired a car to leave the area and move through many places to avoid being chased by the authorities.
During the escape, Loi used the money he had appropriated to buy a Honda Vario motorbike, jewelry made of gold, and for personal expenses. Notably, the subject also gave an acquaintance 9.4 million VND. However, this person completely did not know that it was property stolen by Loi.
After a few days of hiding in Ho Chi Minh City and Vinh Long province, on July 22, Loi felt scared and decided to go to Vinh Long Provincial Police to surrender.
Here, Loi returned the remaining assets, including 23.2 million VND in cash, a gold necklace and a motorbike he bought from the stolen money.
Through investigation, it was determined that Loi committed the crime alone, had prepared, and took advantage of the victim's negligence to appropriate valuable property.
The case is being further investigated and clarified. The authorities are also consolidating the handling records in accordance with legal regulations.
