Data backup is not enough to fight ransomware

Faced with increasingly sophisticated AI cyberattacks, data protection is now not just about backing up, but also about the ability to recover when problems occur.

According to the survey "Digital Transformation in Southeast Asia 2025" by data storage and management company Synology, more than 55% of businesses in Southeast Asia have experienced ransomware or attack attempts in recent years, reflecting the existence and duration of this risk to business operations.

In Vietnam, the Vietnam Network Security 2025 report of global cybersecurity company Foresiet recorded about 552,000 cyber attacks in 2025. About 52.3% of agencies and businesses have suffered losses from these attacks.

Ransomware attacks continue to be a cybersecurity threat, especially in the context of AI development today. This poses a major challenge for units and businesses to find optimal solutions.

Mr. Henry Nguyen, Business Manager of Synology Vietnam, emphasized that in the context of businesses accelerating digital transformation, while facing increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks, we want to bring a more realistic perspective on how to build a platform to protect data and sustainable recovery capacity for organizations.

Representatives of Synology pointed out that simple backup is no longer enough to help businesses protect continuity in operation. "Blind spots" such as untested backups, unsafely separated storage, lack of version backup policies or not linked to actual recovery goals can cause businesses to spend more time restoring systems, leading to operational disruptions and increased losses.

One of the solutions proposed by Synology is ActiveProtect, a data protection platform designed for businesses to build network security recovery capabilities in a more focused, simple and easy-to-deploy direction.

This solution supports businesses to strengthen data backup and recovery capabilities, increase the safety of backups with mechanisms such as immutable backup and network isolation, and improve access management and control capabilities in the entire data protection environment.

Representatives of Synology data management company also emphasized the multi-layered data protection approach. Accordingly, businesses not only need to have data copies, but also must ensure that those copies can be recovered, properly isolated and maintain integrity when incidents occur.

This is also the foundation for businesses to minimize interruptions, protect business operations and maintain customer trust in an increasingly unpredictable risk environment.
